With great power comes great responsibility is what I think of when referring to Optimizers, haha. If a person can use it, but not abuse it then they can be allowed to carry on. Even still it's hard to not overshadow the other players that are not optimized. They can hopefully use that power to be the rising tide that raises all ships. Agreed though, it is very hard to say good things about players like that without putting a string of caveats on them.

Ok gang, this is a DM Resource request!
I'm looking for a place to purchase inexpensive minis. These are mostly for my players, we don't use a grid, but I've been thinking that a visual reference for combat would be nice. I'm not too into the whole paper mini thing; I'd rather just use game pieces if its going to be that simple.
I'm looking for two types specifically:
1. Indiviual pewter minis. I remember when I was a kid I could buy these dang things for a buck a piece out of a "dig-n-save" bin full of them at my local game shop. Now, they seem to pricey as heck and difficult to find. I don't need them painted (in fact I'd prefer unpainted) or anything like that and I'd prefer to be able to pick and choose which I want.
2. Cheap plastic minis; like those green army guys we all used to have, but fantasy themed. These can be a big bulk grab bag, in fact I'd prefer that. I'll be using these to represent the adversaries on the field.
I've found some of the first category on Amazon, but they are always expensive and/or have ridiculous shipping costs. I don't even know where to look for the second kind.
Ready..go!

Reapermini.com has the biggest collection I've been able to find, and a decent searchable database. They have pewter and plastic. However, I don't think you'll find discount pewter figures anywhere, except resale on e-bay/craigslist.

I'm looking to create a few characters, and I want to use the 3 x 5 method, but I can't find a written description among the sources, and my cursory internet searches didn't pull up anything relevant. And I forget which episode it was in...

Dungeon Master Block Episode 30, 1 hour 06 minutes. It was on the show notes over at Tribality, but the gist of it was this: describe 3 each of the following background elements.
1) Places 2) Events 3) Allies 4) Rivals 5) Enemies

Has anyone else tried the map program Hexographer? I've used it, and I've found that it's a pretty easy program to use and create nice, old school-style hex maps. I just use them for world building rather than dungeons or anything--though they do offer that option with Dungeonographer. I didn't particularly like Dungeonographer, but then again, I've been using the official D&D tiles, so it doesn't do anything I'm not already doing better. My general opinion of Hexographer: Score: 4/5 Pros: Easy to learn. Lots of tile and terrain options. Free option available. Cons: Creating more realistic contours for terrain/rivers/trade routes is a lot of work. Using the generator is okay (not great) for creating a region, but terrible for creating a world.

I don't even know where to look for the second kind. Ready..go! So, I've been researching this over the past few weeks. I've found a couple amazing sites for getting quality miniatures, one cheap, the other expensive, but awesome! The expensive/awesome award goes to: Dark Sword Miniatures! These guys have AMAZING product. A sample of two categories of minis: minis based of the art of Larry Elmore (yes, that's right), and minis based off characters from A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). The minis are a bit pricey; in the 8-20$ range, but they are very, very cool. A link to their site: www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop/index.php/ (Mainprize, will you add that link to the master list when you get a chance please) Also, if your wallet is feeling a bit heavy, you could throw in on this Kickstarter: My source for cheap minis is a little website called Ebay. Yup, I've already managed to win a couple auctions where I got classic '70s and '80s vintage minis for a buck or two a piece. Just waiting on them to ship now. Planning on surprising the group with a city map and minis in a session or two. They've been begging for them, and besides, I've rediscovered how much I love minis! Just looking at those old Ral Partha pewter minis on my computer screen caused waves of nostalgia. I used to go buy minis out of the bargain bin at Pegasus Games here in Madison. I never even used them for gaming, I just put them on a shelf and gazed at their awesomeness. The shop is still around, but they no longer have a bulk grab bin of minis for $1.00 or $0.50 each...sad.
