May I ask one of the most sensitive questions in geekdom: Kirk or Picard. First off, welcome to the forums! Second: Ok, I'm not even a Star Trek fan, but this question immediately sparked a raging internal debate. You see, I'm a huge Shatner fan, but I can't really stand behind Kirk. Here's why (I think): I grew up in the wrong era. Kirk is the classic '70s manly man; he pops his collar, glares down vocal opposition, and will knock your teeth in with a wild haymaker. All he's missing is the mustache. Picard is a '90s man. He's a leader; his strength is in his mind and his charisma rather than in his fists. He dominates opposition with logic and a strong will, and, while he won't shy away from a fight, he isn't a naturally violent man. Kirk is all burning passion, anger, testosterone and (mentioned above) popped collars. Picard is a thinker, a renaissance man, a cool head and a nurturing hand. So, while I like Kirk, I gotta stand behind Picard as a better example for the leaders of the world. All that from a guy with a borderline dislike of all things Star Trek. I'm almost embarrassed by my need to address this question.

I'm only partly a Star Trek fan as well. It is my least favorite from all the 'stars' (though I do enjoy it, don't get me wrong!) I would just rather watch Star Wars or Star Gate instead. That being said I stand beside Kirk, because he is the original... that is probably the only reason, I only watch the first or second seasons of Star Trek anyway .

NOW THERE IS AN AWESOME SCI-FI SHOW! So which is your favorite??? SG1 Atlantis or Stargate: Universe (whatever that last lame show was)? Mine is and will always be SG1. Atlantis was pretty dang good too though!

That being said I stand beside Kirk, because he is the original... I'm enough of a Trekker to know that this is technically untrue. Before Captain Kirk there was Captain Pike. Then he got bottled up in some bizarre training accident that left him a box with a light. All that said I agree with Friar Took's assessment. Kirk solves his problems with a phaser, tight pants (sometimes too tight) and two raging fists (that good ol' "Cowboy diplomacy"). Picard addresses problems largely through his crew but also through diplomacy and wit. As someone who has been a pretty big fan of all things Star Trek (at least up until about 3/4 of the way through Voyager) I have to follow that question with another question: Best for which situation? Need someone to negotiate a peace treaty or perform an academic mission? Go with Picard. Need someone to drink coffee, make wittisms, and potty train Borg? Janeway's your gal. Need someone to win a war at all costs and awesomely? Nobody but Sisko. And if the Klingons are stirring up trouble or there's anything involving tribbles, it's time to break Kirk out of his box. Be sure to read the warning label about dated jingoism and chauvinism though. Just because the show was revolutionary and progressive in the 60s doesn't mean it still is by today's standards.

My favorite Stargate would probably be Atlantis, just because my grandfather and I would sit around and watch it together. SG1 is amazing as well and I am always a sucker for Macgyver.

Oh man, the new BSG is the bee's knees!!! They lost me the first episode with Boomer and Starbuck. I loved the character of Starbuck to much to deal with the change. Funny though I am totally ok with a female Thor.

Dude, I was the same way when it first came out. Totally swore I'd never watch it. As a 70s child, I too had an image in my head about what BSG should be. So I never saw the first season live. However between the first and second seasons, I watch the whole first season and was completely hooked. Such an amazing show!

I sort of missed the boat on this greeting thread, but welcome to the Block Party nonetheless! I know the hidden geek feeling all too well. Grew up in an extremely car family, and love learning about anything and everything. Don't hide it, but if a person can't talk about geek stuff then I'm more than willing to talk about whatever they can talk about. I grew up on TNG and Reading Rainbow and the fact that I could watch Levar Burton twice a day on two different shows was unbeatable, haha. Picard > Janeway > Kirk > Sisko > Archer. Already love all the stuff you have posted, so keep doing that!
