Hi guys! So I found this neat little tool during an internet argument. It’s pretty niche, but for those of us who like getting down in the weeds and under the hood with world building, it’s kinda cool. Basically, it helps you figure out how much a creature has to eat, given its weight and biology. www.world-builders.org/lessons/less/biomes/annutrita.htmlHow did I come across this? Well, some absolute FOOL on Reddit did some calculations based on the caloric content of blood and determined that a vampire would need to feed so much that remaining undetected is infeasible and a vampire-run society would imply American levels of factory farming and consumption. The problem? He assumed a vampire would eat as much as a human. I don’t need to tell you that, being undead, they probably are more in line with cold-blooded animals than the people they once were. So I found this formula, used the parameter for reptiles, and punched in the weight of an adult man. Naturally, the caloric requirements come down a lot and the classic vampire hiding among us looks plausible. So anyway, I hope this excites you fantasy ecology nerds. Never again will your players have their buy-in threatened by an impractical monster lair or inconsistent predator!

This tool is awesome! I am probably going to close the tab immediately so that I don't get lost for hours.
Secondly, the argument by that individual also assumes that they are sustained completely on blood alone, which feels quite the reach. The desire to drink blood always comes across in lore as an urge due to the curse of vampirism, rather than the one and only food source. What's the point of a decadent feast hall when all you would really need at that point is a farm, haha.

What's the point of a decadent feast hall when all you would really need at that point is a farm, haha. Why, for the DRAMA of course! Everyone knows vampire lords are super extra. So maybe the food turns to ash in their mouths like the crew of the Black Pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean, but you gotta show those nosey adventurers that you put together a lavish feast just because you CAN!
