I am working on a one-shot I want to run while my cousin and his wife are in my area for Thanksgiving, and thought I'd share it with the Blockparty. At the time I'm writing this the write-up is not finished, but I'll provide a short summary and fill in the details this weekend.
In the city of Carrag, the PCs have been hired by the city guard to deal with a cult kidnapping people off the docks. The guard is currently stretched thin as they prepare to deal a crippling blow to a local thieves' guild otherwise they'd be doing it themselves. The guard knows the following: the Flamecast (the cult in question) gained a new leader a few months back who has been whipping the cultists into a fervor, clearing out an old cavern under the city of urchins (the setting's equivalent of goblins) and repurposing it for their own use.
The PCs have a few options for dealing with the cultists, as there are a few secret tunnels (known to the lone surviving urchin) that will let them bypass a number of the cultists and some of them can be talked down. The leader and the results of his experiments make up most of the "boss" fights.
Within the cavern are the surviving kidnapped citizens and three captured guardsmen, but if the players take too long or make too much noise the leader escapes through a secret exit and destroys his notes and as much of the "evidence" as he can. Should the players manage to kill him before he destroys his lab, the PCs will find letters and notes hinting to a much larger network.
That's the sparknotes version of a dungeon I made loosely based off of WoW's Ragefire Chasm.

Sounds solid and fun! How do you plan on hinting at the research going on? I can understand being concerned that the leader might escape, but preserving research notes and that type of evidence is another pretty important objective, yes?

The major hint to the research will be the ogre-sized man with rents in his skin that has flames leaking out of them, but also the various flame-themed creatures found throughout the cavern. The creatures will look obviously twisted and warped, and blow up once they are killed.
I'll be running this for my cousin and his wife tomorrow, before they leave to go back home on Friday. I'll provide a report on their thoughts and how they did.
