I have 5 players at the moment. 4 of them love writing backstories. In fact, it's more like they need to write a backstory to understand their character. The 5th player has more of an improv background, can't stand writing backstories, loves finding out who his character is through actual play.
I think I want to come up with a backstory for him that has been wiped from his memory. But as to who would have done this to him, or why, I have no idea yet.
This character is a scourge aasimar wild magic sorcerer with an artisan background. This is the backstory we have to work with:
Vyncent is an artisan in the mumblemumble Guild, specifically a glassblower. Odd things tend to happen around him, and due to these problematic tendencies, he's a bit of a black sheep with the Guild currently. After an accident with a Guild space caravan in which he was the only survivor, he's taken up residence on the Arcturus to continue his craft while pursuing the means to get himself back in good standing.
So the true nature of the accident might be why his memories were altered. Personally, I think the most interesting thing might be that his memory was altered as to disguise the origin of either his wild magic or his being an Aasimar or both.
Ideas I've had: - Maybe he discovered something he shouldn't have, either about the guild, or something darker. But killing him wasn't an option? - Instead of having his memories modified to hide something from his past, the reason he doesn't remember anything is because he's actually a manifestation of a beholder's dream... But that might be a little much.

DISCLAIMER First I would warn you about making backstories FOR your players without their permission. It sounds like your player might want that from you, but still tread carefully. And always be willing to change your plans and backstory to benefit the player's experience. It is after all their character and you already have a world to play with. Just be accommodating and make sure you don't pave over what your player wants to do with their character. DISCLAIMER
But now lets get to the fun part.
1. I kinda like the idea of the beholder bit, but you are right in it possible being to much. HOWEVER what you could do is instead of having no MEMORY he could have no PAST. Maybe make it a possibility or a fact that Aasimar are born fully grown. They kind of just pop into existence and have little to no inclination to learn of their non-existent past (Which could make their character an unusual case if they do want to know)
2. You could also have it that his memory was taken by one or both of his parents because having him was kinda a whoopsy for some reason. Forbidden love, raising a child a hassle, child could be used against them, ect.
3. In the more mundane, the accident could have actually been an attack or theft. The guilty parties, needing a scapegoat to cover their crime, used a type of magic or poison that corroded his memories of the incident. He would wake up later and assume he had been the one responsible.
On a side note, I think I love the mumblemumble Guild. xD

Maybe he fell in love with a celestial. Being forever changed by that forbidden love, he turned into an aasimar from another mortal race (human). As an attempt to hide that relationship, his memory was voluntarily altered by the celestial, who went into hiding with their child afterwards.
