Hi everyone!
TLDR: Help me design a fun monster hunt in a city for level 4 adventurers!
You want more backstory? After meeting with an information broker called the Domino, the party has been tasked with hunting down whatever has been killing the Eyes of the Domino (they act as information gatherers & receptionists in a way, facilitating meetings between the Domino and clients). The location this takes place in is a pirate-cove/city of thieves/den of iniquity called the Anchorage. It's an chain of asteroids that are connected by floes of ice. This is high-fantasy sci-fi, so lots of wiggle room to do lots of fun things.
I'm currently thinking that the monster is a demon summoned by someone in the city who would prefer to make their next move in secrecy, so they are "blinding" the Eyes of the Domino to set up whatever step 2 is.
The Party Within the party, we have a cleric, bard, artificer, sorcerer, mystic, and a Blood Hunter, a skillset that this stint is supposed to highlight.
What I'm Looking For Good ideas for demon attack/crime scenes, clues to find. Basically those scenes in the witcher where they hunt down a monster, I want to replicate that feeling. I haven't totally determined what monster they are hunting, so I'm willing to take suggestions, but it should be tough. CR 9-10 I'm thinking. This party punches way above their weight.
I'm happy to answer any follow up questions, but... Yeah! Let's brainstorm!

A shadow-based being of some kind could fit the bill? Something that leaves evidence of its presence behind, but tracking and identifying it are difficult.

One or more slithering trackers from Volo's Guide to Monsters may help.

I wonder if you could steal inspiration from Blade movies. As well, although I wouldn't recommend the books in general, the Shadowhunters books/TV series has some interesting crime/murder scenes with demons that could be adapted.

Thanks everyone! I went with a modded invisible stalker. There were a few clues: a witness said they saw the victim but never the attacker, there were only one set a prints in the snow (that match the victim's boot), and then I had some flavor text for the monster hunter that let them make some logical jumps. I decided to keep the actual investigation super light.
