So I had an idea to run a haunted Mansion. The inhabitant hadn't been seen for many years and anyone who went inside hadn't been seen again. You are approached by the town a leader (mayor or elder) to investigate a manor on the edge of town. People have gone missing over the years but no one wanted to investigate because, you know, spooky Mansion. They hired a adventuring band to go out and look for evidence and the adventurers had gone Missing and the townsfolk are willing to spend a bit more for you to check on their original investment. The leader had a large tattoo of a lion for reference.
Leading up is very dense brush and forest but a visible iron gate. Through the gate is a walled courtyard. Front door is worn and open, as in unlocked. Big house, very clean, not a complicated layout. You want to give a sense that the style is older, like shag carpet and Paisley wallpaper equivalent to the time period. Like it's being preserved in the way an old spinster keeps the same furniture, terrified of changes. They'd have been busy uncovering loot and fighting undead doing housework (sweeping and mopping, townsfolk that have gone missing). In the study, investigation reveals a hidden bookshelf passageway to a basement.
Once in the basement you come upon a lab, clean and well lit. There appears to be a crudely sewn together corpse under a sheet on a gurney in the middle of the room under a magic lantern spotlight. The leaders distinct tattoo of a lion is stretched across one of its mangled legs. Your party can realize it's the mangled remains of the first group. It's contorted in a way that makes it seem medium sized. The rest of the room is lined with shelves with books of different languages, alchemist based stuff, and pretty much anything you want. So to the point. In the back of the room, there is a small ornately guilded stand. On it is a covered brain in a jar, as soon as someone gets in range for telepathy you can have the jar start monologuing about the reasons first or very quickly fly over and embed itself into the chest of the corpse. Cracking bone and it jumps up, unfolding to a large creature. Boom. Evil wizard brain in a jar, embedded inside a flesh golem like some weird master blaster. Just wanted to be left alone and all the Interlopers had to be dealt with. But so many at once meant he had to do something. And that something was destroy the town to deter any more distraction. Beat him up and get him to stop killing, or kill him and problem solved. Then just return to town, convince them to stay FAR away, or that it won't be an issue any more. Like I said, one shot idea.
Loot, level, enjoy.
