Hey guys, I can't seem to find the answer to this question. Under equipment, there is a Grappling Hook available for purchase. However, there is no description of what it does. Can someone enlighten me as to what bonuses a grappling hook confers?

Looks like DM Fiat my friend. I looked up Grappling Hook in PHB and was surprised to find no mention whatsoever what bonuses if any it provides a PC. I then checked the erratas to see if anything was there and did not find anything. So as of now grappling hooks look like they have no 'official' mechanical purpose.

Ranged DEX attack roll to toss it where you want. Followed by an Athletics roll to climb. That's how I would play it.

So here are the 3 options I thought of the grappling hook for myself:
1. A grappling hook reduces the difficulty of a strength/athletics check for climbing by 5. 2. A grappling hook offers advantage to strength/athletics checks for a climb. 3. You may use acrobatics instead of athletics to make a climb check when using a grappling hook.
Explanation: Some of the dexterity based classes have difficulty climbing walls, trees, or otherwise performing assassination/burglary. A grappling hook attached to a rope would alleviate the problem for these characters.

2. A grappling hook offers advantage to strength/athletics checks for a climb. I tend to let the use of a rope lessen the DC of the climb check to begin with, but whether it's a lower DC or advantage is probably up to the individual DM

I think climber's kit already provides advantage on climbing checks which negates your first and 2nd point since I believe statistically advantage ends up providing about a +5 to a roll. I like your 3rd point in allowing someone to use Acrobatics instead of Athletics for climbing when using a grappling hook though.

I honestly can't see how you could define a rope climb as Acro instead of Ath. A rope is generly straight up, which would take raw STR to climb. Leaping from side to side while going up, such as back and forth in the alley between two buildings, could constitute as a parkoure style DEX ability in my mind. Similarly, using the rope and grappling hook to swing across something could be a DEX check too.

Rope climbing often comes down to technique rather than brute strength. It is the reason why I would rule it for dexterity.

They could go full cirque du soleil with the rope to get up it. Could use running and swinging across. Haha. I made it a Ranged attack to try and lasso a creature, and would use that as well to do a grappling hook toss after reading this.

D&D Beyond: "When tied to the end of a rope, a grappling hook can secure the rope to a battlement, window ledge, tree limb, or other protrusion." Climber's Kit prevents falling if the climber chooses to secure themselves.
I would say 5 feet of Climbing Endurance per Strength or Dexterity score point(their choice) and climbing speed equal to half or one-fourth walking speed(rounded down) unless they have a climbing speed of their own.
